What Does True Unity Look Like?

Writer's picture: Simon WilliamsSimon Williams

I think that many people today misunderstand unity, thinking it’s about prioritizing peace or sameness. But Jesus said, "A house divided against itself will not stand." To be in unity means to be part of a shared cause or "house."

What really matters is twofold:

Are the differences significant enough to divide the house, and is the house itself worthy of unity?

Unity is not about avoiding conflict for the sake of superficial peace. It’s about rallying around a cause that is rooted in truth and worthiness. But here’s the challenge: true unity requires properly ordered love. If our love is disordered, prioritizing the wrong things, then our unity becomes fragile or even harmful.

That’s why we need the best guide possible to show us what properly ordered love looks like. That guide is Jesus Christ. In Him, we see a love that perfectly balances truth and grace, justice and mercy. He shows us that unity is not about conforming to sameness but about aligning ourselves with what is truly good and worthy—even when it’s costly.

So, the question we must ask ourselves is this: Are we part of a house worth standing in? And do our differences reflect healthy diversity within that house, or do they reveal cracks in the foundation?

Let’s pursue a unity that reflects the properly ordered love of Christ. Let’s prioritize truth and worthiness over superficial peace. And let’s invite others to join us in a house that will truly stand.
